A letter urging Security Council to Lift Sanctions of Iraq PDF Print E-mail

In a letter sent on Friday, September 15, 2000, CBD Director, Dr. Louay Safi, urged the United Nations Security Council to lift the economic sanctions from the Iraqi people and to resort instead to an arms embargo to curtail the aggression of the Iraqi regime. Dr. Safi argued that the sanctions outlived their usefulness, and have become a source of a major humanitarian disaster in Iraq.

In a letter sent today to the president of the World Bank, CBD director pointed out the need for the world bank to live up to its declared mission and the objectives of its widely publicized Comprehensive Development Framework.

In his letter, Dr. Safi condemned the Russian aggression against Chechnya and warned that, given the circumstances, the World Bank's loan would more likely contribute to invigorating Russian military war machines, and assisting a government bent on self-destruction and the destruction of others.

Letter to the Director General of WTO PDF Print E-mail

On November 24, 1999,  Dr. Louay M. Safi in his capacity as the Director the Center of Balanced Development,sent a letter to the Director General of World Trade Organization Mike Moore, few days prior to the commencement of the Third WTO Ministerial Conference, to be held in Seattle, Washington, between November 30 and December 3, 1999.

In his letter, Dr. Safi expressed his concern over the direction pursued by WTO, and proposed a three-point approach to bring about more equitable development strategy. Following is the text of CBD Director's letter.
