“We thought the established democracies would support those who are crying out for democracy and freedom. But these countries did not live up to their commitment to democracy and human rights,” said Louay Safi, spokesperson for the Syrian National Coalition -- the only group recognized by countries supporting the opposition as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people -- in an exclusive interview with Sunday's Zaman.

After three years Syrians are used to defying expectations

Barrel bombs don't kill dreams. Neither do scud rockets, warplanes, tanks or canisters of Sarin gas fired at sleeping children.

Three years into an uprising against a tyrant and his police state, it seems the world has decided our dream of freedom, justice and dignity has turned into a nightmare. But on this day - the third anniversary of the first large-scale demonstrations against the regime - I call on all those who look at what's happening in Syria with fear and trepidation to put their faith in the people of Syria. We have become used to defying expectations.

Geneva’s Negotiation and Charade

The drive to end dictatorship in Syria is 34-month old, and would soon complete its third year of bloodshed, destruction, and pain. Throughout the 34 months of this bloody conflict, the Assad regime tried to end the uprising by brutal force, insisting on a military solution. Young Syrians who took up arms to defend themselves and their neighborhoods against the onslaught of the regime’s sectarian forces, including fighters from Hezbollah, Iranian, and Iraq. Syrian fighters who confront the regime and its allies, likewise, insist that the only language the regime understands is the language of force, and continue their arm struggle to defend their towns and villages, and to fight the regime’s advanced military force. The result is a vicious conflict that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians and bystanders, particularly in areas opposed to the regime.

Arab Democracy is a work in progress

The Arab Spring has paved the way for countries across the Arab world to embrace democracy but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on a social and political level. Creating a truly democratic society in countries such as Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Yemen goes well beyond politics. There is a need for profound changes to the education system so that younger generations learn about the importance of concepts like social co-operation, the rule of law and citizenship. There also needs to be an increasing amount of public debate about these issues.

The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), an organization created to fight discrimination against Arab Americans and defend their civil liberties and human rights, has decided to disinvite a Syrian composer and pianist because he chose to present a piece expressing hope for freedom in his homeland, Syria.
